Idle Calm

Capturing Fremantle’s transformative coastline through photography & dark soundscapes.

As winter takes hold and the gothic clouds roll over Fremantle, the once turquoise waters now churn a deeper blue. This ‘changing of the guard’ is a time to slow down, reflect, reset and brace yourself for the ensuing chaos that a Perth summer brings.

Captured in a series of gothic-like photos with immersive soundscapes responding to each image, artist Michael Smith has collaborated with Lincoln MacKinnon to create ‘Idle Calm’, a work that celebrates ‘The Big Lull’ that winter brings to our coastal town.

The works are housed in a shipping container on the small gravel car park at the base of South Mole, Fremantle (1 Fleet St Fremantle is the closest address).
This is located near the J Sheds and The South Metropolitan TAFE.

The shipping container housing these works is a nod to Fremantle’s working port and celebrates the transitory nature of our seaside village. Its placement ensures that the works are enjoyed in situ – with seaside views and sounds of the roiling ocean.
